Virtual Light Box for Film Negatives

Turn any screen into an even, adjustable backlight. Lay a negative or a slide on the glass and photograph it from above, and you have the capture a scanner would have given you.

Getting a clean capture

Most disappointing captures come down to reflections and geometry rather than resolution. Working through these in order gets you most of the way there.

  1. Open it full screen on your biggest screen. A laptop or tablet fits a whole strip. Brightness at maximum, color at 5500K.
  2. Dim the room. Film is glossy, so any lamp or window lands on the frame and washes out contrast. The screen should be the only light source.
  3. Lay the negative emulsion side down, flat on the glass. Any gap lets light in from the side and softens the edges of the frame. If your film curls, weigh both ends down with a couple of coins. Pick your format in the mask control and lay each frame over a lit window.
  4. Hold the phone parallel and fill the frame with one negative. Tilting turns rectangles into trapezoids and throws part of the frame out of focus, and resolution spent on the surrounding film base is resolution wasted.
  5. Tap to focus on the film, not the screen. Cameras often lock onto the pixel grid behind the negative instead of the grain in front of it.
  6. Turn the flash off. On-camera flash into a screen gives you one blown circle and nothing usable.

Two things to adjust if the first capture is not right. If you can see the screen's pixel grid, move the phone back a few centimeters and crop in afterward; the grid only shows when the camera starts resolving individual subpixels. And if the highlights come out blown, the capture was overexposed, so drop the light table brightness to around 70 percent rather than trying to recover it in editing.

Why a screen works as a light box

A light box is a bright, even, diffuse white surface, and a backlit LCD or OLED panel is exactly that. The diffuser layers that make a screen readable from an angle also spread the backlight evenly across its whole surface, which is the property that matters. Uneven light gives you a capture that is brighter in the middle than at the edges, and that survives conversion as a visible hotspot.

A screen has one advantage over a cheap dedicated panel: the color is adjustable, so you can hold it at neutral daylight instead of the slightly green or magenta cast some budget LED panels have. The trade-off is peak brightness. A proper viewing panel is far brighter, which buys you shorter exposures and less noise, though that only really matters when copying with a camera on a tripod at a small aperture.

What the mask is for

Pick a format and the screen goes black except for a row of lit windows shaped like the frames on a strip: 35mm full frame, half frame, 6x4.5, 6x6, 6x7, or a mounted slide. Lay the strip so each frame sits over a window.

The black surround is the point. Lit screen around the negative bounces around inside your lens and lands back on the sensor as veiling flare, which lifts the blacks and flattens contrast in a way no amount of editing fully recovers. Masking everything except the frame you are shooting is exactly what a physical scanning mask does, and it is the cheapest contrast you will ever get. The windows also line a strip up straight, which saves rotating every frame later.

Because a browser cannot know the physical size of your display, the windows start at a nominal size rather than a measured one. Lay a real negative on the glass, adjust the window size slider until the two match, and leave it there for the rest of the session. Choose "None" if you would rather light the whole screen, which is still the better mode for simply looking through a strip to see what is on it.

After the capture

A photograph of a negative is still a negative, and two things have to happen before it looks like a photo. The tones need inverting, so dark becomes light. And on color film the orange mask, the amber base layer built into color negative stock, has to be removed and each color channel rebalanced separately. Skipping that second step is why a straight invert in a phone editor comes out heavily blue.
